The X Games is entering a new phase of its commercial development as it takes its team-based league into winter competition, turning an established action-sports brand into a broader entertainment platform that can remain visible beyond individual events and Olympic cycles.

The first winter draft comes after the launch of the X Games Summer League, which introduced teams representing Los Angeles, New York, Sao Paulo and Tokyo. New York ultimately won the summer championship in New Orleans, securing a $500,000 prize for its athletes. The format represents a significant departure from the traditional national-team structure of the Olympics, placing greater emphasis on team identity, recurring competition and audience engagement.

The business case is supported by the league's recent audience performance. The summer series attracted 18.3 million television viewers in the United States, a 78% increase from the previous year on linear television, while its global video views exceeded 200 million. The 2026 Aspen X Games also recorded 15.3 million U.S. television viewers, up 43% year over year, and drew nearly 50,000 spectators after selling out within three weeks.

Those figures matter because the value of a modern sports property increasingly depends on its ability to combine live attendance, television exposure, digital consumption and entertainment. X Games is building that combination into its operating model, using competitions alongside music and festival programming to broaden the experience beyond the sporting event itself.

The winter league introduces a different commercial challenge. Unlike the summer events staged in urban environments, winter competitions will rely on ski resorts in Aspen, Calgary and Ruka, Finland. That creates a more complex production environment, but it also connects the league directly with destinations, tourism activity and the established culture surrounding winter sports.

Athletes are central to that strategy. Eileen Gu is expected to be the first overall selection in the winter draft, while snowboarder Mark McMorris and skier Alex Hall are among the other athletes highlighted by X Games leadership. Gu, who was born in San Francisco and competes internationally for China, also brings an established global profile that can increase the league's visibility across different markets.

The relationship with the Olympics is another important part of the league's positioning. X Games leadership views the two properties as complementary rather than directly interchangeable. Olympic competition can generate intense global attention around athletes during the Games, while X Games seeks to maintain their visibility, stories and commercial relevance during the years between Olympic events.

That strategy is particularly significant as action sports continue to move into the mainstream. Skateboarding and BMX, once associated primarily with alternative youth culture, are now established Olympic disciplines and are scheduled for their third Olympic cycle at the Los Angeles 2028 Games. X Games therefore operates in a market that has expanded considerably since the competition was launched in 1995.

The brand itself remains one of the league's most important assets. Its combination of sport, music, festival culture and youth-oriented entertainment differentiates it from conventional sports competitions. The winter league is effectively testing whether that identity can be converted into a recurring team-based property with stronger commercial continuity.

The next stage will depend on whether audience growth can be sustained after the initial launch momentum. A successful winter format could give X Games a more consistent calendar, create additional opportunities for sponsorship and media partnerships, and strengthen the commercial value of athletes whose popularity can extend across multiple platforms.

The broader shift is therefore not simply about adding another competition. It is about transforming X Games from a collection of high-profile events into a year-round sports and entertainment ecosystem, using teams, athletes, digital audiences and live experiences to deepen its relationship with younger consumers.
