At least seven people have died after a UPS cargo plane crashed while taking off Tuesday afternoon in Louisville, Kentucky. The crash caused a large fire and impacted nearby businesses, officials said.

UPS Flight 2976, with three crew members on board, crashed around 5:15 p.m. while departing Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport. The death toll is expected to rise, and at least 11 people were reported injured.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear described the incident as a “catastrophic crash.” The plane struck an area containing a petroleum recycling business and an auto parts store. While all but two employees at the auto parts business have been accounted for, officials are still assessing whether any other individuals were in the area at the time of the crash.

The aircraft, a McDonnell Douglas MD-11, was bound for Honolulu. The crash site is about three miles south of the airport. Video footage shows a large fire and thick black smoke rising from the wreckage. The plane had approximately 38,000 gallons of fuel on board.

Emergency crews have been going door-to-door in nearby facilities to ensure everyone is safe. Several explosions were reported at the site. Officials do not believe the plane carried cargo that would cause an environmental impact, though the crash area itself may pose hazards. Residents in nearby areas have been ordered to shelter in place.

UPS, headquartered in Louisville, has suspended operations at its main air hub, Worldport, following the crash. The company expressed condolences to those affected and has set up a hotline for family inquiries.

The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the crash. Authorities warned that the area will remain an active scene for several days as investigators assess the site and recovery continues.
