UNESCO Reassesses Global Geoparks to Safeguard Geological Heritage and Natural Landscapes
A Paris meeting examines 16 new geopark applications and reviews 61 existing sites, highlighting the importance of scientific standards and sustainable management.

Maintaining the international recognition of geological heritage sites requires more than adding new locations to global conservation networks. It also depends on regular assessments, clear management standards and the ability of designated areas to preserve their natural and scientific value over time.
This approach is reflected in the latest work of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Council, which is holding its 11th session at the organization's headquarters in Paris from November 2 to 4, 2026.
The council's agenda includes the assessment of 16 applications seeking admission to the UNESCO Global Geoparks network. Three proposals had previously been postponed, making the current review an opportunity to reconsider their eligibility alongside the other nominations.
At the same time, 61 geoparks already included in the network are undergoing a revalidation process. This review is intended to determine whether these sites continue to satisfy the conditions associated with UNESCO recognition, emphasizing that international designation requires ongoing commitment rather than a one-time approval.
Geographical boundaries are another important issue under consideration. The council is examining one proposed modification involving a change of more than 10% of a site's area, as well as three additional proposals involving adjustments below that threshold. Such changes require attention because the boundaries define the areas covered by the programme's recognition and management framework.
The meeting also addresses governance and the future administration of the network, reflecting the importance of maintaining consistent procedures as the number of recognized geoparks and applications develops.
A further information meeting is scheduled for November 4, bringing together the Global Geoparks Council and the International Geoscience Programme Council, with representatives of UNESCO Member States expected to attend.
The evaluation process highlights the broader role of geoparks in connecting geological conservation with education, scientific research and sustainable development. These areas provide opportunities to understand Earth's history while supporting responsible management of natural landscapes and local resources.
Through the review of new nominations and existing sites, UNESCO is seeking to preserve the credibility of its global network and ensure that recognition continues to reflect meaningful commitments to geological heritage protection.
