British counterterrorism police have rearrested two men on suspicion of assisting Iranian intelligence in connection with an alleged plot involving RAF Fairford, a strategically important military air base in western England used by U.S. forces.

The arrests, announced Tuesday, mark a significant development in a national security investigation that began following a major security incident near the base on September 27.

Two Suspects Detained Under National Security Law

According to British Counter Terrorism Policing, the suspects are a 24-year-old British national and a 25-year-old dual British-Iranian national, both from the Westminster area of London.

The men were rearrested under Section 3 of the United Kingdom's National Security Act 2023, which covers conduct that materially assists a foreign intelligence service.

Both had previously been detained and released on bail while investigators continued examining the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Five other men arrested during the investigation remain on police bail. No formal charges have been filed against any of the seven suspects.

What Happened Near RAF Fairford?

On September 27, authorities responded to reports of three suspicious vans near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire.

The incident triggered a major security operation involving armed police and military bomb-disposal specialists. Nearby residents were temporarily evacuated as investigators examined the vehicles.

Police later confirmed that gasoline had been found inside the vans, but no explosives were discovered.

RAF Fairford is particularly sensitive because it has hosted American strategic bombers involved in military operations against Iran. The incident also prompted changes to the deployment of U.S. aircraft at the facility.

British Authorities Suspect Iranian Involvement

Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor, who leads Britain's National Counter Terrorism Policing, said investigators believe Iranian state involvement is highly likely.

However, he stressed that detectives are still working to determine the nature and extent of any foreign involvement and the objectives behind the suspected operation.

The investigation remains active, with authorities examining multiple lines of inquiry.

Iran has denied involvement in the incident.

The distinction is important: British investigators have publicly expressed strong suspicions of Iranian involvement, but those allegations have not been established in court.

Why This Matters to the United States

RAF Fairford plays a significant role in American military operations in Europe and the Middle East.

Any credible security threat involving a facility used by U.S. bombers raises concerns extending beyond British national security, particularly during heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran.

The case also highlights the growing attention British intelligence and counterterrorism authorities are paying to suspected foreign-directed operations on British territory.

Investigation Continues

As of October 20, British authorities have not publicly established whether the suspected activity was intended to cause physical damage, gather intelligence, or pursue another objective.

No one has been convicted or formally charged in connection with the incident.

TN News will continue following developments as investigators release verified information.
