Train Collides with Fire Truck in Florida: 3 Firefighters and 12 Passengers Injured

A train collided with a fire truck responding to an emergency call in Delray Beach, Florida, on Saturday morning, leaving three firefighters and 12 passengers injured, local authorities reported.
The Delray Beach Police Department, alongside the train operator Brightline and the National Transportation Safety Board, is investigating the cause of the crash. Brightline operates passenger rail services between Orlando and Miami.
Video footage from Brightline shows the fire truck crossing the tracks shortly after a freight train had passed in the opposite direction. According to the Associated Press, the fire truck stopped at the crossing and then bypassed the lowered crossing arms before the collision occurred.
The injured firefighters were hospitalized in stable condition, while passengers sustained minor injuries and were treated at the hospital. Palm Beach County Fire Rescue assisted in evacuating the train. No fatalities were reported.
The crash, which occurred around 10:45 a.m., led to a temporary road closure. Authorities stated the roadway would reopen after the investigation and cleanup are completed.
Delray Beach Fire Chief Ronald Martin noted that the fire truck might have been responding to another call for service before the incident, though further details were not available.
Brightline, which began operations in 2018, has been involved in prior incidents since expanding its service to Orlando in September 2023. Federal data indicate 34 fatalities involving Brightline trains occurred from September 2023 to June 2024. However, none of these incidents have been attributed to Brightline.
Brightline has initiated a safety campaign to promote rail crossing awareness, with over 45,000 individuals signing its online safety pledge.
