Seal Leaps Onto Boat to Escape Hunting Orcas in Washington Waters
A seal sought refuge on a photographer’s boat as a pod of transient orcas closed in near Camano Island.

A wildlife photographer on a whale-watching trip off the United States coast experienced an unexpected encounter when a seal jumped onto her boat to flee a pod of orcas. Ms. Charvet Drucker was out with friends on November 2 near Saratoga Passage off Camano Island, Washington, when they spotted a group of Bigg’s orcas. These transient killer whales, known for roaming from Alaska to Northern California and hunting marine mammals, noticed a seal nearby and began pursuing it.
In an effort to escape, the seal swam directly toward Ms. Drucker’s vessel and climbed aboard. A video shared on Facebook shows the frightened animal at the back of the boat while Ms. Drucker reassures it. The orcas circled the boat for about 15 minutes, hoping for another chance at their prey, before eventually moving on.
As the boat neared the shore, the seal apparently felt safe enough to return to the water and left the vessel on its own. Ms. Drucker said she named the seal Bahati, meaning “lucky” in Swahili, noting how fortunate it was to evade more than six orcas.
