Scarlett Johansson Confirms She Won’t Return as Black Widow in the MCU: ‘Let It Go’
Superheroes may be seen as invincible, but Scarlett Johansson wants to remind everyone that some heroes deserve a final farewell.
In an interview with InStyle published on Tuesday, the Lost in Translation star addressed the persistent speculation about her Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) character, Natasha Romanoff—better known as Black Widow—who met her demise in Avengers: Endgame (2019).
"Natasha is dead. She is dead. She’s dead. Okay?" Johansson stated firmly.
For those who may have forgotten, her character—a highly skilled assassin—was a key member of the Avengers. She sacrificed herself to obtain an Infinity Stone, a crucial act that led to the defeat of the formidable villain Thanos and ultimately saved the universe.
As Marvel transitions into its next cinematic phase, beginning with Fantastic Four: First Steps this summer, rumors have circulated about the possibility of Natasha’s return.
However, Johansson was quick to shut down the speculation.
"They just don’t want to believe it. They’re like, ‘But she could come back!’" she said. "Look, I think the balance of the entire universe is held in her hand."
She continued, "We have to let it go. She saved the world. Let her have her hero moment."
A new Avengers lineup is set to debut in Avengers: Doomsday (2026), a film that will feature Robert Downey Jr.'s return to the MCU—but not as Iron Man. Instead, he will portray the infamous villain Dr. Doom.
