Russell Vought assumed the role of acting director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) on Friday night, while officials from Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) deleted the bureau’s X account, a source familiar with the matter .

Vought’s appointment, first reported by The Wall Street Journal, followed his Senate confirmation to lead the Office of Management and Budget just a day earlier.

According to the source, DOGE officials have been granted administrative access to CFPB’s systems, including its content management system, back-end website infrastructure, and personnel directory.

“CFPB RIP,” Musk posted on X Friday afternoon, accompanied by a tombstone emoji.

Later that evening, the DOGE team took control of and deleted the CFPB’s X account, the source added.

The CFPB’s homepage now displays a “404 page not found” message, though other sections of the website remain operational.

“Everyone is dismayed and angry,” the source said, describing the atmosphere within the agency.

Neither the White House nor the CFPB has responded to requests for comment.

The deletion of the CFPB’s X account comes after Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who was appointed acting CFPB director last weekend, ordered an indefinite freeze on nearly all agency operations.

On Saturday, a letter signed by dozens of House Democrats urged Bessent to revoke what they described as an “illegal stop-work order.”

Led by Rep. Maxine Waters, the ranking member of the House Financial Services Committee, the letter expressed deep concern over efforts to sideline the CFPB. Lawmakers requested Bessent clarify the impact of the freeze on consumers who had previously been identified as victims of financial institution misconduct.

Meanwhile, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, the ranking member of the Senate Banking Committee, warned President Donald Trump on Tuesday that the freeze contradicts the administration’s stated goal of preventing financial exclusion and reducing costs for American families.

“More Americans across the country will unfairly lose access to deposit accounts as a result,” Warren cautioned.
