Prehistoric Dice Reveal Native Americans May Have Been Gaming Since the Ice Age
Archaeologists uncover evidence of early gaming tools dating back to the late Ice Age
Gaming might be far older than we thought.
A recent study has uncovered evidence that Native Americans were likely using primitive dice-like objects more than 12,000 years ago — long before the classic cube-shaped dice appeared in ancient civilizations like Mesopotamia.
These early tools, known as “binary lots,” were simple two-sided pieces made from wood or bone. Instead of rolling like modern dice, they were flipped — similar to tossing a coin. Archaeologists discovered these objects across several sites in the western United States, dating back to the late Ice Age.
For years, these artifacts were labeled vaguely as “gaming pieces,” mainly because their purpose wasn’t fully understood. But researcher Robert Madden developed a method to analyze their shape, markings, and usage patterns — helping confirm that many of them were indeed used as dice.
Using this approach, Madden identified more than 600 previously unrecognized dice sets from 45 archaeological sites, significantly expanding our understanding of early gaming.
Interestingly, these dice weren’t just used for entertainment. In many ancient cultures, dice played roles in decision-making, rituals, and even spiritual practices. However, evidence suggests that Native American communities primarily used them for games and gambling.
Still, not all experts are fully convinced. Some argue that without stronger contextual evidence — such as where the objects were found — it’s difficult to definitively prove they were used as dice.
Despite the debate, the study opens a fascinating window into human behavior. It shows that even thousands of years ago, people sought social interaction, competition, and fun — much like we do today.
