Preventing future health threats increasingly depends on understanding the connections between people, animals and the natural environment. This principle is at the heart of the One Health approach, which international organizations are seeking to strengthen through closer cooperation and shared public health strategies.

On November 3, 2026, the World Health Organization brought together international health and environmental institutions in Brussels, Belgium, for a high-level dialogue focused on turning this approach into practical action.

The meeting was organized in partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the United Nations Environment Programme and the World Organisation for Animal Health, with participation from European institutions and other international partners. Its timing coincided with World One Health Day, observed annually on November 3.

Rather than treating human health as an isolated issue, the One Health framework recognizes that changes in ecosystems, animal health and environmental conditions can influence the spread and emergence of diseases. This interconnected perspective makes cooperation between different sectors essential to effective prevention.

One of the key areas addressed during the dialogue was the need to improve health surveillance systems. Better monitoring can help authorities identify potential threats earlier, while stronger coordination between institutions can support faster and more effective responses to health risks that cross national borders.

Vector-borne diseases also featured among the priorities. Diseases transmitted by organisms such as mosquitoes and ticks can be influenced by environmental conditions and changing climate patterns, creating challenges for health authorities and reinforcing the importance of monitoring changes in disease distribution.

The discussions further highlighted the need to translate international commitments into practical policies, supported by scientific information, institutional cooperation and stronger preparedness systems.

The significance of the One Health approach lies in its ability to connect issues that have traditionally been addressed separately. By linking environmental protection with animal and human health, governments and international organizations can develop broader strategies to reduce risks before they become major public health challenges.

The Brussels dialogue reflects a growing recognition that protecting communities requires more than medical interventions alone. It also depends on understanding environmental changes, monitoring threats and building partnerships across sectors to create more resilient health systems.
