Olive Oil Before Carbs: Could Timing Influence Blood Sugar?

A new study in mice suggests that consuming olive oil before glucose may affect the body's blood sugar response, adding a new dimension to research on the oil's health benefits.

Olive oil's reputation as a beneficial part of a healthy diet may extend beyond its well-known nutritional properties. New research conducted on mice is examining whether the timing of its consumption could influence the way the body responds to glucose.

The study, published by the American Diabetes Association, investigated whether consuming olive oil before a glucose solution could reduce or delay the rise in blood sugar. The research builds on earlier findings suggesting that eating fat before carbohydrates may help prevent blood glucose from increasing too rapidly after a meal.

Although this effect has been observed in previous research, the biological processes behind it are not yet fully understood. The researchers therefore focused on a possible explanation involving the stomach and the body's regulatory signals.

Their hypothesis was that olive oil consumed before glucose might slow gastric emptying, meaning that food moves from the stomach into the intestine more gradually. This process could also activate hormonal and nerve signals involved in blood sugar regulation.

The findings were described as promising, but an important distinction remains: the experiment was conducted in mice. Its results do not establish that taking olive oil before meals produces the same effect in humans, nor do they confirm that drinking a shot of olive oil is an effective way to manage blood sugar.

Olive oil has already attracted scientific attention because of its nutritional composition. It is rich in monounsaturated fatty acids and has been associated with higher levels of HDL, often referred to as "good" cholesterol, and lower levels of LDL, commonly known as "bad" cholesterol. UC Davis Health also points to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compounds as possible contributors to health benefits.

The new research adds another question to the discussion: whether the potential effects of olive oil depend not only on its composition, but also on when it is consumed.

Further research, particularly studies involving people, would be needed to determine whether the findings can be applied to human health. Until then, the mouse experiment should be viewed as an early scientific lead rather than evidence supporting olive oil shots as a blood sugar treatment.
