NYPD Detective Mohamed Amen helped promote public safety during the Egyptian Day celebration by distributing naloxone kits and raising awareness about how community members can respond to a suspected opioid overdose.

Naloxone, commonly known by the brand name Narcan, is an emergency medication that can rapidly reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. Making it available to members of the public can help save lives during the critical minutes before emergency medical services arrive.

Detective Amen’s outreach also highlighted the importance of recognizing the warning signs of an overdose. These may include:

* Being unconscious or unable to wake up

* Very slow, irregular, or stopped breathing

* Choking, gurgling, gasping, or unusual snoring sounds

* Extremely small “pinpoint” pupils

* Blue or gray lips and fingertips, or severe paleness depending on skin tone

A suspected overdose must always be treated as a medical emergency. Bystanders should immediately call 911, administer naloxone if it is available, try to keep the person breathing, place them on their side to help prevent choking, and remain with them until emergency responders arrive.

Even if the individual wakes up after receiving naloxone, emergency medical assistance is still necessary because the medication’s effects are temporary and overdose symptoms can return.

By bringing this lifesaving information directly to Egyptian Day attendees, Detective Mohamed Amen demonstrated the important role community outreach can play in preventing overdose deaths. His initiative gave families both practical knowledge and access to a tool that could help them save a life.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, if someone is unresponsive and an overdose is suspected, it is safest to treat the situation as an overdose and act immediately.
