NYPD Chaplain Dr. Tahir Kukaj Celebrates Heritage and Unity at Egyptian Day in Manhattan

MANHATTAN, NEW YORK — NYPD Muslim Chaplain and interfaith leader Dr. Tahir Kukaj joined law enforcement officers, community leaders and organizers at the fifth annual Egyptian Day celebration in Midtown Manhattan on Saturday, September 5, 2026.

Held on West 50th Street between Sixth and Seventh Avenues, the event brought together Egyptian families, cultural organizations, businesses and members of New York’s broader Arab-American community. The annual celebration was organized by the Happiness Organization for Human Relief and featured music, cultural performances, family activities, Egyptian food and local vendors. EgyptAir served as the event’s main sponsor.

During the celebration, Dr. Kukaj addressed attendees from an NYPD podium surrounded by American, Egyptian and law-enforcement flags. He also met with officers and community representatives, reflecting the event’s message of cultural pride, public service and cooperation among New York’s diverse communities.

In a statement shared following the event, Dr. Kukaj said he was honored to participate alongside community leaders, law-enforcement officers and organizers. He thanked the St. Mark Coptic Law Enforcement Officers Society, the Arab American Law Enforcement Fraternal Association (AALFA) and local Egyptian organizations for their contributions to the celebration.

AALFA works to empower Arab-American law-enforcement professionals while promoting diversity, cultural understanding and stronger relationships between officers and the communities they serve. The association describes unity, professionalism and community service as central parts of its mission.

Dr. Kukaj’s participation carried a meaningful interfaith message. An Albanian-American Muslim leader with longstanding ties to New York’s religious and civic communities, he was appointed an NYPD Muslim chaplain in 2019 after years of community outreach and interfaith cooperation. He has worked closely with Muslim, Christian and Jewish leaders throughout the city. His appointment recognized more than two decades of efforts to connect young people, religious institutions and law enforcement.

His presence at an Egyptian celebration supported by Coptic and Arab-American law-enforcement organizations demonstrated how cultural events can build connections beyond nationality or religion.

Egyptian flags decorated the Manhattan street as attendees celebrated the country’s history, traditions and contributions to New York City. The gathering also gave younger Egyptian Americans an opportunity to connect with their heritage while introducing the wider public to Egyptian culture.

The strong participation of community leaders and law-enforcement organizations helped turn Egyptian Day into more than a cultural festival. It became a public demonstration of heritage, service and unity in the heart of New York City.
