The New York City Council has announced a $25.6 million allocation to modernize adult psychiatric units at NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue and add 40 hospital beds, according to an announcement shared by Council Speaker Julie Menin.

The investment comes amid what the Council describes as a severe shortage of psychiatric beds. The funding is intended to expand Bellevue’s capacity to provide inpatient mental health care while improving its adult psychiatric facilities.

Photographs accompanying the announcement show city representatives and hospital officials presenting a ceremonial check for $25.6 million outside Bellevue and visiting the hospital.

For New Yorkers who need hospital-based psychiatric treatment, the planned expansion represents an investment in the city’s ability to provide essential care. The announcement did not specify when the modernization work would be completed or when the additional beds would become available.
