The Mexican government is planning to impose a $42 immigration fee on each passenger aboard cruise ships that dock in the country.
According to previous reports by the Associated Press, the $42 fee will apply to passengers regardless of whether they disembark or choose to remain on the ship.
The new law states that Mexico’s National Immigration Institute will issue a “group visa” for everyone listed on the ship’s passenger manifest.
This proposed law has raised concerns among certain tourism groups.
When combined with a $5 fee per passenger already imposed by local states, it could make Mexican destinations among the most expensive in the world, according to the Mexican Association of Shipping Agents (AMANAC).
In a statement, the association urged the government to reconsider implementing these fees, warning that Mexico’s cruise industry would become less competitive compared to other Caribbean destinations, which are cheaper to visit.
Currently, cruise ship passengers are exempt from Mexico’s immigration fees as they are classified as “in transit.”
