Matawan Council Election: The Case for Gabriel and Stuetz

The November 3 council race is bringing municipal spending, property taxes, infrastructure and train-station development into sharper focus as four candidates compete for two seats.

A local election should be an opportunity to ask where our money is going, how major decisions are made, and what kind of town we are building for the future.

That is why I support Mark Gabriel and Raymond Stuetz for Matawan Borough Council in the November 3 election.

Matawan has made improvements to its roads, parks, and public spaces. Residents can value that work while asking what each project costs. According to the borough’s 2026 budget presentation, the average annual municipal property tax increased by $264.33 from 2025. Residents deserve clear explanations of project costs, borrowing, and the long-term effect on their bills. (matawanborough.com)

On its Community Concerns page, the Matawan’s Future campaign raises questions about water and sewer rates, utility infrastructure, the local cost of grant-funded projects, and development at 160 Main Street and near the train station. These are the campaign’s concerns; its specific claims should be checked against public records, and the current council should have an opportunity to respond. The underlying questions deserve public answers.

The campaign also addresses the future of Matawan’s water utility. In its utility statement, Matawan’s Future says it wants to review the financial options, including keeping the utility or considering a sale, and says no decision has been made. I believe any review should be independent and public, with a clear explanation of what each option would mean for service, rates, debt, and local control.

Gabriel and Stuetz have emphasized responsible spending, transparency, and thoughtful development. I support that direction. I also expect them to explain their proposals in detail, show the numbers behind them, and remain accessible to residents after Election Day. (tnnewsonline.com)

Democrats Arlan Feiles and James McCue deserve the same opportunity to make their case. Voters should hear from all four candidates and judge their answers on the merits. For me, Gabriel and Stuetz offer the approach Matawan needs now: ask difficult questions, examine the costs, and make decisions openly. They have my support on November 3. (monmouthcountyvotes.gov)
