Keyport Honors Robert Dillon for 63 Years of Community Service
Keyport recognizes a six-decade public service career that continued across law enforcement and pedestrian safety roles.

Keyport’s recognition of Robert Dillon underscores a form of public service measured less by a single position than by sustained commitment to the same community. At a Borough Council meeting, the Borough of Keyport and the Keyport Police Department honored Dillon for a career that has stretched across 63 years and multiple public safety responsibilities.
Dillon’s professional record began in law enforcement. He spent 43 years as a police officer and ultimately retired with the rank of sergeant. Rather than marking the end of his involvement with local public safety, retirement became a transition into other community roles. He subsequently served for six years as a special law enforcement officer and for another 14 years as a crossing guard.
Taken together, those positions illustrate how long-term community service can evolve alongside changing responsibilities. Dillon remained connected to Keyport’s public safety environment well beyond his full-time police career, moving from traditional law enforcement into a role directly focused on protecting pedestrians and supporting safe movement within the borough.
From an institutional perspective, the recognition also reflects the value local governments place on continuity and civic commitment. Public safety depends not only on formal enforcement powers, but also on the people who maintain a visible presence in the community and build familiarity with residents over time. Dillon’s six decades of involvement provide an example of that broader model of local service.
The Keyport Police Department described his contribution as a lasting one and thanked him publicly for his dedication to the borough and its residents. The department also encouraged the community to join in recognizing the milestone.
The significance of Dillon’s career therefore extends beyond the 63-year figure itself. His progression from police officer and sergeant to special law enforcement officer and crossing guard demonstrates how public service can remain relevant through different stages of a career. For Keyport, the ceremony offered an opportunity to connect institutional recognition with a broader message about continuity, civic responsibility and long-term investment in the community.
The recognition was based on an official announcement from the Keyport Police Department.
