House Speaker Mike Johnson announced during a closed-door meeting on Saturday that Donald Trump supports advancing his agenda through a single, sweeping legislative package, according to sources present. This significant move carries both potential risks and opportunities as the party prepares to tackle the president-elect’s ambitious plans.

The proposed bill would combine border security, energy, and tax policies into one comprehensive measure, marking a departure from Senate Republican Leader John Thune's previous strategy. According to a source familiar with the shift, Trump’s team has reassessed the legislative landscape following recent challenges, including the spending bill deadlock and a narrow speaker’s race, concluding that handling two separate bills would leave little room for maneuver.

Key Republican leaders in the House, including Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith, have long advocated for a unified approach. Smith argued that dividing the agenda into two bills could lead to complications in the narrowly Republican-controlled House. "The best and fastest way to deliver for President Trump is through one big, beautiful package," Smith told CNN last month.

This strategy shift also played a pivotal role in securing Johnson’s position as speaker. Rep. Rich McCormick of Georgia revealed that the commitment to a single package influenced his decision to support Johnson. Similarly, Rep. Keith Self of Texas, who changed his vote in Johnson’s favor at the last moment, expressed optimism about tackling the agenda through a unified bill.

However, crafting such a large-scale package poses significant challenges. It will require extensive negotiations across multiple committees and may take considerably longer than a more focused border-security bill. Initially, Thune had envisioned passing a narrower border bill within 100 days after becoming majority leader. A combined tax, border, and energy package, however, is unlikely to meet that timeline.
