The New Jersey Devils secured a dramatic 4-3 shootout victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday night, bringing the visitors’ three-game winning streak to an end. Jack Hughes was central to the result, scoring twice and providing an assist in a performance that helped New Jersey extend its own strong run to five wins in six games.

The game also marked Connor Hellebuyck’s first home start of the season. The goaltender made 19 saves, contributing to a victory that gave the Devils their second consecutive win.

Hughes’ opening goal prompted chants of “USA! USA!” from the crowd, recalling his overtime winner that secured Olympic gold for the United States against Canada. Hellebuyck had also represented the Americans in Milan and was making his third start for New Jersey since joining the team through a trade.

Arseny Gritsyuk settled the contest by scoring the decisive goal in the shootout, while Connor Brown found the net during regulation against his former team. Brown had spent two seasons with Edmonton and was part of the Oilers squads that reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2024 and 2025.

For Edmonton, Connor McDavid continued his remarkable start to the season, extending his NHL-record assist streak to 16 games with his 31st assist, the highest total in the league. Evan Bouchard, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Leon Draisaitl were the Oilers’ scorers.

Goaltender Tristan Jarry finished with 31 saves. Although his shutout streak, which had lasted more than seven periods, came to an end, he kept Edmonton in contention until the shootout.

The night also carried historical significance for Nugent-Hopkins. His appearance marked his 1,038th regular-season game, moving him past Hall of Famer Kevin Lowe to become the player with the most regular-season appearances in Oilers franchise history. Teammates wore commemorative shirts featuring the number 1,038 and a caricature of the forward.

Edmonton was also dealing with a number of lineup changes. Forward Isaac Howard was unavailable because of a left knee injury expected to keep him out for a couple of weeks, although coach Mike Babcock said it was not considered a long-term concern. Trent Frederic was left out as a healthy scratch, while defenseman Jake Walman returned after missing three games.

The result highlighted the Devils’ ability to capitalize on key moments, while Edmonton’s losing effort brought its recent winning momentum to a halt despite McDavid’s continued record-setting contribution.
