Iga Świątek secured her place in the semifinals of the 2025 Australian Open with a commanding 6-1, 6-2 win over American Emma Navarro on Tuesday. However, the match was not without controversy.

Despite Świątek’s dominant performance, a double-bounce call in the second set stirred debate over the use of video technology in tennis. The incident took place during the fifth game of the set when Świątek rushed to the net to return a drop shot. She failed to reach the ball in time, and it bounced twice before she sent it back to Navarro. The umpire did not call the double-bounce, allowing Navarro to continue playing and lose the point. Since Navarro didn’t immediately challenge the decision, she couldn’t review the call using video technology.

“It happened so fast,” Navarro commented after the match, not blaming anyone for the decision. “You hit the shot, and she hits it back, and you just think, ‘Okay, maybe I can still win the point,’ even though it’s a tough situation. I think we should be able to review it afterward and make the call.”

While frustrating, the point had little impact on the overall result, as Świątek remained in control throughout. She is the only woman left in the semifinals who has not lost a set this tournament.

Świątek, reflecting on the double-bounce situation, admitted she wasn’t sure of what had happened. “I didn’t see the replay afterward because I stayed focused and didn’t want that point to linger in my mind,” she said. “I wasn’t sure if it was a double bounce or if I hit it with my frame—it was hard to say because I was sprinting.”

Świątek will now face American Madison Keys in the semifinals on Thursday. Keys reached this stage by defeating Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 earlier on Tuesday, marking her third semifinal appearance at the Australian Open, a decade after her first.

“To be here 10 years later in the semifinals again, I’m really proud of myself and excited to play in another semifinal in Melbourne,” said Keys, 29. While she has never reached the Australian Open final, she will need a special performance to overcome the formidable Świątek.
