The American Football League Europe (AFLE) is strengthening its presence in Italy with the addition of Guelfi Firenze, a club whose long-standing local roots and championship record bring an established football community to the competition ahead of the 2027 season.

Based in Florence, Guelfi Firenze will make its AFLE debut in 2027 after more than two decades of developing its organization and building support for American football in the region. Founded in 2000, the club has accumulated 26 years of experience and won three Italian championship titles, in 2022, 2025 and 2026.

The move is structured to allow Guelfi to maintain its place in the Italian Football League (IFL). The team will compete in the AFLE after the conclusion of the IFL season, giving the club an opportunity to participate in both competitions.

For the AFLE, the arrival of the Florence team represents a continuation of its presence in the Italian market. The league also acknowledged the contribution of the Firenze Red Lions and their owner, Bart Iaccarino, during the 2026 season, as the competition prepares for this transition.

AFLE CEO Jim Tomsula described the addition as consistent with the league's planned approach to expansion, highlighting the club's stability, commitment to player development, integrity and community. Commissioner Andreas Nommensen also emphasized Italy's importance to the sport and pointed to the experience and strong local following Guelfi has developed over 26 years.

From the club's side, General Manager Edoardo Cammi characterized the move as a significant new challenge and a natural progression toward competing at the professional European level. He stressed the organization's ambition to continue growing while maintaining its established values and approach.

Guelfi Firenze's entry adds an experienced Italian organization to the AFLE and gives the league another platform for developing American football in the country. Its first season in the competition is scheduled for 2027.
