Egypt is moving to reposition mining as a more significant contributor to economic growth, with a broader strategy aimed at attracting investment, developing mineral resources and expanding domestic processing and manufacturing.

The fifth edition of the Egypt Mining Forum, scheduled for September 28–29, 2026, is expected to bring together more than 6,000 participants from over 50 countries, including more than 500 conference delegates, 100 speakers and around 100 exhibiting companies. The program will feature more than 30 strategic and technical sessions covering exploration, project development, financing, technology and mining services.

For Egypt, however, the central challenge extends beyond identifying mineral wealth. The priority is to turn geological potential into projects that can secure financing, move into development and ultimately reach production.

Over recent years, the government has introduced a series of regulatory measures intended to make the sector more attractive to investors. These include changes to mining exploitation agreements, lower rents for research and exploration licenses, tax and customs exemptions for mining equipment and services, multi-commodity licensing and reconnaissance licenses designed to give smaller exploration companies greater access to the market.

The government is also working toward streamlining the licensing process, an issue that remains critical for investors assessing the time, cost and regulatory risks associated with developing mining projects.

Egypt's mineral resources provide a substantial base for this strategy. The country has estimated reserves of around 3.1 billion tonnes of phosphate, 660 million tonnes of iron oxide deposits and 6.1 billion tonnes of kaolinitic sands. These resources are supported by infrastructure that includes 18 commercial ports, two economic zones and an extensive road network covering about 174,000 kilometers, alongside a large national electricity system.

Several major mining assets are already part of Egypt's investment landscape, including the Sukari gold mine, Abu Tartour, the Golden Triangle and black-sand resources.

The government is also undertaking a comprehensive airborne mineral survey, described as the first of its scale in more than four decades. The objective is to improve the quality and availability of geological data and provide investors with more reliable information when evaluating exploration opportunities.

For international mining companies and financial institutions, the quality of geological data can be as important as the size of the resource itself. Investment decisions depend on whether potential deposits can be assessed accurately, whether regulations are sufficiently clear and whether projects can move efficiently from exploration to development and production.

These issues are expected to feature prominently at the Egypt Mining Forum, alongside discussions on exploration licensing, mining project development, financing, joint ventures, mineral processing, technology procurement and geological risk management. Business-to-business meetings will also provide opportunities for companies and investors to explore potential partnerships.

Egypt's strategy is increasingly focused on moving beyond the export of raw minerals toward greater domestic processing and higher-value industrial activity. The government has set an objective of increasing the mining sector's contribution to around 6% of GDP.

Achieving that goal would have implications well beyond mining companies themselves. A larger and more developed mining industry could generate additional demand for heavy equipment, engineering services, transportation, energy, technology and other specialized services, while creating opportunities for local supply chains and downstream industries.

The forum is expected to attract senior representatives from African mining ministries and international companies and institutions, including AngloGold Ashanti, In2Metals, the International Council on Mining and Metals, Suez Engineering, the World Bank, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and Afreximbank.

The event will be held at The St. Regis New Capital Cairo under the patronage of President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and hosted by the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, with support from the Mineral Resources and Mining Industries Authority.

Ultimately, the success of Egypt's mining strategy will be measured less by the size of conference attendance or the number of announced agreements than by the projects that emerge afterward: new exploration investment, commercially viable mines, processing and manufacturing facilities, technology transfers and stronger local value chains.

For Egypt, the next stage of mining development is therefore not simply about discovering more resources. It is about creating the investment, regulatory and industrial conditions needed to turn those resources into long-term economic value.
