Four-Hour Elon Musk Documentary Sells Out Ojai Film Festival Opening Night
The sold-out screening highlights growing audience interest in documentaries exploring influential figures and contemporary real-world issues.

A four-hour documentary examining Elon Musk became the opening-night attraction at the Ojai Documentary Film Festival in California, where tickets sold out ahead of the screening. The turnout offered a glimpse into the audience appetite for documentaries focused on prominent public figures and issues shaping contemporary life.
The festival takes place in Ojai, a small community located a little more than an hour north of Los Angeles. Its program brought together films exploring a range of subjects, from influential personalities to cultural and social questions.
Documentary Interest Drives Festival Attendance
David Berger, owner of the Ojai Playhouse, told Newsweek that documentaries consistently attract strong interest in the community, particularly when they address real-world subjects.
The film Musk was selected to open the week-long festival, which was presented by the Ojai Playhouse and Hotel El Roblar. Its program also included You Can See Everything, directed by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheimer, alongside Nuisance Bear and a film about artist Jean-Michel Basquiat.
The event extended beyond regular screenings, with a special appearance by Lauren Greenfield, director of The Queen of Versailles.
The range of selections reflects the festival's emphasis on documentaries that examine people, events and subjects beyond conventional entertainment narratives.
A Historic Theater at the Center of Ojai's Film Culture
The Ojai Playhouse is more than a venue for the festival. According to Berger, the theater first opened as a movie house in 1914 and has continued to serve the community as a cultural institution for 112 years.
He described the theater's history as closely connected to the identity of Ojai, explaining that its role has always involved bringing films and cultural experiences to local audiences.
The sold-out screening of Musk therefore represents both a successful festival opening and an example of the continuing relationship between documentary cinema and community-based film culture.
While the event took place in a relatively small California town, the audience response demonstrated the appeal of documentary storytelling when it focuses on recognizable figures and subjects that generate public discussion.
