A stellar lineup of musicians came together on Thursday night for a meaningful cause.

Two benefit concerts, collectively named FireAid, took place at the Kia Forum and the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, Los Angeles, to support relief efforts following the devastating wildfires that swept through the LA area earlier this month. The fires claimed 29 lives and caused billions of dollars in damage.

Green Day opened the Forum concert with “Last Night on Earth,” featuring a surprise appearance by Billie Eilish. They followed with “Still Breathing” from their 2016 album Revolution Radio and their 1994 classic “When I Come Around” from Dookie.

Following their performance, Billy Crystal took the stage to welcome the audience, announcing that U2 had donated $1 million, which was matched to double the contribution to $2 million. Crystal, who lost his Pacific Palisades home of 46 years in the fire, shared his personal heartbreak but offered a message of hope: “With your help, we’ll laugh again, we’ll listen to music again, and we will be ok.”

At the Intuit Dome, Samuel L. Jackson energized the crowd, expressing gratitude to the first responders in attendance. “We love our firefighters, and we need to help them right now,” he said before introducing Sir Rod Stewart, who opened his set with “Forever Young.”

Pink delivered a raw acoustic performance, including Janis Joplin’s “Me and Bobby McGee,” Led Zeppelin’s “Babe I’m Gonna Leave You,” and her own hit “What About Us.” Slash later made a surprise appearance, joining the Black Crowes for a powerful rendition of Led Zeppelin’s “Going to California.”

Stevie Nicks shared a personal story about how she nearly lost her Pacific Palisades home, built in 1938, but credited the Santa Rosa firefighters for saving it. She dedicated her song “Landslide” to the brave first responders.

A major highlight of the night was a tribute to Nirvana, with indie rocker St. Vincent joining original band members Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic for a powerful cover of “Breed.” Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon and Joan Jett performed additional Nirvana classics, with Grohl’s daughter, Violet, closing the set with “All Apologies.”

The concerts raised significant funds for rebuilding communities affected by wildfires and supporting future fire prevention efforts across Southern California.
