EU, China Resume Talks on Chinese EV Tariffs Amid Ongoing Trade Tensions
The European Union and China have resumed negotiations aimed at removing EU-imposed tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles (EVs), Handelsblatt reported on April 10. According to the German outlet, Chinese Commerce Minister Wang Wentao and EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic met in Beijing in late March and agreed to pursue a negotiated resolution to the dispute.
The revival of talks signals a continued interest by both Brussels and Beijing in containing bilateral trade friction. However, past rounds of negotiations have yielded limited progress, and the broader context suggests this third attempt may face similar challenges. While the EU has expressed growing concern over China's geopolitical posture, the EV tariffs are rooted in economic considerations — specifically, protecting Europe's emerging EV sector from what Brussels characterizes as state-backed, unfair competition from Chinese manufacturers.
The timing of renewed talks also coincides with recent positive developments in EU-U.S. trade relations. U.S. President Donald Trump's temporary suspension of retaliatory tariffs on EU goods likely boosts Brussels' confidence in navigating its transatlantic trade agenda, reducing the urgency to compromise with China on EV-related issues.
This marks the third round of trade talks between China and the EU focused on EV tariffs. Earlier negotiations took place prior to the EU's implementation of tariffs in mid-2024 and continued after the measures came into effect in November 2024. Despite renewed dialogue, the fundamental tensions surrounding industrial policy, market access, and strategic autonomy remain unresolved.
