Erling Haaland continues to dominate headlines at the FIFA World Cup 2026, adding another individual achievement to his remarkable tournament after winning the fan vote for the best goal of the Round of 16 in the Hyundai Goal of the Tournament competition.

The Norwegian striker secured the honor thanks to his spectacular second goal in Norway's dramatic 2-1 victory over five-time world champions Brazil at New York New Jersey Stadium. The strike highlighted both his technical ability and physical presence, reinforcing his reputation as one of the world's most complete forwards.

The decisive moment arrived in the closing stages of the match. After controlling the ball brilliantly on the edge of Brazil's penalty area, Haaland shifted it onto his stronger foot before unleashing a powerful low finish beyond goalkeeper Alisson into the bottom corner. The goal effectively sealed one of Norway's biggest victories on the international stage.

Global supporters rewarded the effort by giving Haaland's goal 34% of the public vote on FIFA.com, comfortably placing it ahead of Lionel Messi's goal against Egypt, which received 25%. Morocco's Azzedine Ounahi finished third with 16% of the vote for his free-kick goal against Canada.

The recognition adds to an already outstanding tournament for Haaland, who has scored seven goals in his first FIFA World Cup appearance. His performances have transformed Norway into one of the tournament's surprise contenders and strengthened his position among the leading candidates for individual awards.

Norway's victory over Brazil also carried significant sporting importance. Eliminating one of the competition's most successful nations demonstrated the Scandinavian side's growing maturity under head coach Ståle Solbakken and highlighted its ability to compete with football's traditional powers.

The team successfully protected its advantage despite a late Neymar penalty and advanced to a quarterfinal showdown with England. A victory would send Norway into the FIFA World Cup semifinals for the first time, where it would face either Argentina or Switzerland.

The Hyundai Goal of the Tournament competition continues throughout the World Cup. Winners are selected after each knockout stage before fans vote in a final round following the conclusion of the tournament to determine the overall Goal of the Tournament.

Earlier rounds saw Uzbekistan captain Eldor Shomurodov win the group-stage vote before Cape Verde's Sidney Lopes Cabral claimed the Round of 32 award, making Haaland the latest player to join the shortlist for one of the competition's most prestigious individual honors.
