Emma Raducanu Refuses Insect Bite Treatment Due to Doping Concerns
British tennis player Emma Raducanu revealed that she chose not to receive treatment for insect bites before this year’s Australian Open, citing concerns about what substances might enter her body.
The 22-year-old athlete shared with reporters that she had suffered severe insect bites during her tournament preparations but opted to endure the discomfort without medication due to heightened anti-doping scrutiny in the sport.
"I think we're all very cautious about what we put into our bodies and what products we use," Raducanu explained.
"Yesterday, for instance, I was bitten badly by ants, mosquitoes, or something else. I’m allergic, so they swelled up a lot."
"Someone offered me a natural antiseptic spray to soothe the bites, but I chose not to use it. I didn't want to risk anything."
"Instead, I just dealt with the swollen ankle and hand, deciding to tough it out."
This decision follows two significant doping cases that rocked tennis last year, involving Jannik Sinner and Iga Świątek.
World No. 1 Sinner has not faced a suspension after the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) confirmed in August that he was not at fault despite testing positive for Clostebol, an anabolic steroid, at low levels from a sample collected on March 10.
