Eight years transformed Egyptian football.

When Egypt returned to the FIFA World Cup in Russia in 2018 after a 28-year absence, the campaign ended in disappointment with three defeats and no points. The return was emotional, but it left supporters wondering whether the Pharaohs could ever establish themselves among the world's elite.

The answer arrived at the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Egypt's campaign across North America became much more than another tournament appearance. It marked a defining moment in the nation's football history, as the team combined confidence, discipline, and attacking ambition to achieve milestones no previous Egyptian generation had reached.

Drawn alongside Belgium, New Zealand, and Iran in Group G, Egypt immediately demonstrated a different mentality. Against Belgium, one of the tournament's strongest sides, the Pharaohs refused to play defensively. Imam Ashour's opening goal highlighted an impressive performance before the match ended in a 1-1 draw. Although victory slipped away, the result proved Egypt could compete with the world's leading national teams.

The breakthrough arrived in the second group match against New Zealand. After falling behind, Egypt responded with determination to secure a memorable 3-1 comeback victory. Mostafa Ziko equalized before captain Mohamed Salah put Egypt ahead with a brilliant finish, and Mahmoud Hassan Trezeguet sealed the historic win. It was Egypt's first-ever victory in FIFA World Cup history, ending decades of frustration.

Entering the final group match against Iran, qualification remained in Egypt's hands. Mahmoud Saber gave the Pharaohs the lead before Iran equalized, resulting in a 1-1 draw. The point was enough to finish the group stage unbeaten with five points and secure Egypt's first qualification for the knockout rounds of the FIFA World Cup.

The historic journey continued in the Round of 32 against Australia. Egypt dominated large portions of the match, but after a 1-1 draw following extra time, the contest was decided on penalties. Displaying remarkable composure, the Pharaohs won the shootout 4-2 to claim their first-ever knockout victory at the FIFA World Cup and advance to the Round of 16.

Awaiting them was defending champion Argentina.

Despite facing one of football's greatest teams, Egypt produced one of the finest performances in its history. Yasser Ibrahim opened the scoring with a powerful header before goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir saved a penalty from Lionel Messi. Mostafa Ziko then doubled Egypt's advantage, putting the Pharaohs 2-0 ahead and within touching distance of one of the greatest upsets in World Cup history.

Argentina eventually mounted a dramatic comeback. Cristian Romero reduced the deficit before Messi equalized minutes later. In stoppage time, Enzo Fernández completed the turnaround to give Argentina a 3-2 victory, ending Egypt's remarkable campaign.

Although the journey concluded in the Round of 16, Egypt departed with the respect of the global football community. The team had secured its first World Cup victory, reached the knockout stage for the first time, claimed its first knockout win, and demonstrated that it could challenge the sport's biggest powers.

More importantly, Egypt changed the narrative surrounding its football history. FIFA World Cup 2026 was not simply the nation's finest tournament—it marked the beginning of a new era in which Egyptian football proved it belonged on the world's biggest stage.
