Bear Breaks Into California Ice Cream Shop, Goes Straight for the Strawberry
A curious bear surprised staff and police after sneaking into a California ice cream shop in search of a sweet treat

LOS ANGELES – August 17, 2025 — A curious California bear with a sweet tooth made an unexpected visit to a South Lake Tahoe ice cream shop, helping itself to the counter before sheriff's deputies arrived on the scene.
The incident happened in the early morning hours, when the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office was called to investigate a possible break-in. What they found instead was a large bear, making itself at home inside the store — and showing a particular fondness for strawberry ice cream.
“With some encouragement, the bear ultimately left, but only after showing interest in the strawberry ice cream,” the sheriff’s office shared in a light-hearted Facebook post.
The post also noted that “Fuzzy the bear” — as deputies nicknamed it — caused minimal property damage and barely any cleanup was needed.
Photos of the bear behind the counter quickly went viral, adding to California's long history of wildlife encounters in populated areas.
While bear sightings are common in the Tahoe region, especially during warmer months, the animals typically avoid humans unless in search of food. Though they can become trapped or destructive indoors, bear attacks on people are rare.
Officials remind residents and business owners to secure food sources and garbage, especially in bear-prone areas, to avoid future close encounters.
