Apple is exploring a new role for the Apple Watch, moving beyond notifications and fitness tracking toward helping users retain and organize information from everyday conversations. The company has begun beta testing a collection of artificial intelligence capabilities under the name Audio Intelligence.

The features are being introduced to developers through the iOS 27.3 beta update. Announced at Apple's Surprise and Shine hardware event in September 2026, the tools are designed for Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4.

The package includes four functions: Live Rewind, Siri Recap, Sound Recognition and Music Recognition. Together, they aim to make the watch more responsive to both spoken information and sounds in the user's surroundings.

Live Rewind addresses a familiar problem: missing a detail while someone is speaking. By double-pressing the Digital Crown, users can retrieve a text snippet covering the previous 15 seconds of conversation. The displayed information can be saved to the Siri app or used as the basis for questions to Siri. Un saved snippets disappear automatically.

Siri Recap takes a different approach by turning conversations into short, practical summaries rather than complete transcripts. The system is designed to highlight information that may require follow-up, such as dates, deadlines, prices and tasks. Apple identifies workplace meetings, parent-teacher conferences and personal training sessions as examples of situations where the feature could help users retain important details without interrupting the discussion to write them down.

Privacy is a central part of Apple's presentation of the technology. The company says Siri Recap does not identify individual speakers or retain raw audio recordings. Users will also have control over when the feature operates, including the ability to schedule its availability according to working hours or particular locations.

The other two tools expand the watch's awareness of its environment. Sound Recognition can notify users when it detects sounds such as sirens, alarms and doorbells. Music Recognition, powered by Shazam technology, identifies songs playing nearby.

According to Apple, the system combines the S11 chip, secure hardware processing, Apple Intelligence models and Private Cloud Compute to process audio and generate summaries while protecting user information.

The company plans to extend testing through a public beta before a broader release. Live Rewind and Siri Recap are expected to debut in English, with support for additional languages planned later.

The broader significance of Audio Intelligence lies in how it changes the potential role of a smartwatch. Rather than simply recording activity or displaying incoming information, the device could become a practical assistant for recalling conversations and identifying details that might otherwise be forgotten. Its success, however, will depend on how effectively Apple balances convenience, accuracy and privacy.
