"America's Wealth Divide: Median Renter's Net Worth vs. Homeowner's Wealth"

The median renter in the United States has a net worth of $10,400, while the median homeowner boasts a net worth of $400,000. Renters, who account for over one-third of American households, consistently face greater financial challenges compared to homeowners across all income levels. According to the Aspen Institute, renters experience lower cash flow, more burdensome debt, and smaller savings.
Two years ago, Elizabeth Grantham, a 31-year-old from the San Francisco Bay Area, decided to leave the high-cost region for Washington state to save for a home.
“Our rent increased every year, even the cost of our parking space,” Grantham shared with CNN. “Then you move, and soon that rent starts rising too. That’s been the pattern for most of my adult life.”
In recent years, the U.S. housing market has been marked by a growing wealth gap between homeowners and renters, exacerbated by rising home prices. Simultaneously, rents, which dipped briefly at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, have surged, further diminishing savings for many renters.
