Alexander Zverev has turned a season that began with the search for a first Grand Slam title into one of the strongest campaigns of his career, adding the US Open crown to his French Open triumph and becoming only the fourth man in the Open era to win his first two major titles in the same season.

The German top seed defeated American Ben Shelton 6-3, 7-6(2), 5-7, 6-2 in the US Open final at Flushing Meadows, overcoming a brief third-set revival from the 23-year-old American before reasserting control in the fourth. The result gives Zverev his second major championship of 2026 and extends a remarkable run of consistency at the sport’s biggest tournaments.

The significance of the victory goes beyond another trophy. Zverev entered the year having reached major finals without converting them into championships, but his success at Roland Garros and now New York has changed the competitive picture around him. His ability to remain in contention deep into Grand Slam tournaments has increasingly translated into titles, suggesting that the German has strengthened not only technically but also in the mental demands that define long major campaigns.

The final also exposed the difference between the two players’ current levels of reliability. Zverev won 69% of his first serves and took 85% of those points, while maintaining greater stability from the baseline. Shelton, whose serve and forehand have been central to his rapid rise, struggled to maintain that level of consistency during the most important points. His two double faults during the opening set helped Zverev establish an advantage that proved difficult to overturn.

Shelton nevertheless leaves New York with a substantially stronger position in the sport. His run to a first Grand Slam final followed a breakthrough summer that included a second Masters 1000 title at the Canadian Open. He also reached a career-high ranking of No 4. At 23, the American has established himself as one of the leading figures of the next generation, although his return of serve and baseline consistency remain areas that elite opponents can target.

The final carried additional significance for American tennis. Shelton had the opportunity to become the first Black American man to win the US Open since Arthur Ashe in 1968 and the first American man to capture the tournament since Andy Roddick in 2003. Zverev’s victory therefore halted a storyline that had generated considerable attention around the tournament while still leaving Shelton with a breakthrough that could shape the next stage of his career.

From a wider competitive perspective, Zverev has benefited from an unusually disrupted season at the top of men’s tennis. Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner have dealt with injuries and physical setbacks, creating openings for other players to challenge for the major titles. While opportunities alone do not explain Zverev’s success, his ability to repeatedly capitalize on them distinguishes his campaign from several other contenders who failed to sustain their momentum across the Grand Slam calendar.

The German now enters the next phase of his career with a substantially stronger competitive and commercial profile. Two major championships in one season provide the kind of results that can redefine a player’s standing with fans, sponsors and tournament organizers. For Zverev, the challenge will be turning this breakthrough into sustained dominance rather than allowing 2026 to remain an isolated peak.

The achievement also comes against a complicated public backdrop. Zverev has faced allegations of physical abuse from former partners, which he has denied. A German assault case involving Brenda Patea was settled in 2024 without a verdict, with the court stating that the truth remained unresolved. His sporting success has therefore continued alongside scrutiny that extends beyond the tennis court.

For Shelton, the immediate priority is development rather than disappointment. His performance in New York demonstrated that he can compete with the strongest players over the course of a major tournament, while his new ranking and Masters success indicate that the foundation for sustained contention is already in place.

The 2026 US Open consequently represents two different turning points. For Zverev, it confirms a Grand Slam breakthrough and strengthens his claim as one of the defining players of the current era. For Shelton, it marks the arrival of a new American contender capable of carrying the country’s men’s tennis ambitions into the next generation.
