SoundCloud Reinforces Its Independent Music Strategy Through the Acquisition of Nina Protocol
The acquisition preserves Nina Protocol’s editorial assets and creator ecosystem while expanding SoundCloud’s long-term vision for artist empowerment and music discovery.

SoundCloud has announced the acquisition of Nina Protocol, a decentralized music platform that recently ceased operations after struggling to establish a sustainable commercial model. Although financial details of the transaction remain undisclosed, the acquisition represents a strategic investment in intellectual assets, editorial infrastructure, and independent music communities rather than a conventional technology purchase.
Founded in 2021, Nina Protocol emerged during the rapid expansion of Web3 technologies with a mission to give musicians greater ownership of their work. Built on the Solana blockchain and utilizing decentralized storage infrastructure, the platform enabled artists to sell music directly to fans while retaining complete ownership rights and 100 percent of their revenues. Beyond digital distribution, Nina also evolved into a destination for editorial content, artist features, cultural reporting, and genre-focused music discovery.
Despite gaining recognition among independent musicians and respected record labels, Nina ultimately announced its closure after acknowledging that it had been unable to build a financially sustainable business capable of supporting long-term operations. The shutdown reflected a broader challenge facing decentralized creative platforms that have successfully delivered innovative technology but struggled to convert community engagement into recurring revenue.
Through the acquisition, SoundCloud will preserve Nina Protocol’s editorial archive, genre mapping system, and music discovery resources. Rather than allowing years of cultural documentation to disappear alongside the platform, SoundCloud intends to integrate these assets into its broader ecosystem to improve artist discovery while maintaining the historical value of Nina’s independent music coverage.
The agreement also introduces a migration pathway for artists who previously distributed music through Nina Protocol. Eligible creators will be able to transfer their music catalogs and community presence into SoundCloud's creator ecosystem, gaining access to professional distribution services, audience analytics, promotional tools, monetization capabilities, unlimited uploads, mastering services, and direct fan engagement features. Artists will also receive complimentary access to SoundCloud Artist subscriptions for a limited period as part of the transition process.
From a strategic perspective, the acquisition signals that SoundCloud continues to evolve beyond its traditional identity as a music-hosting platform. Instead, the company is positioning itself as an integrated infrastructure provider for independent musicians, combining distribution, audience development, creator monetization, community engagement, and editorial discovery into a unified ecosystem.
The transaction also highlights a broader shift within the digital music industry. Rather than focusing exclusively on acquiring users or technologies, streaming platforms are increasingly investing in cultural assets, creator communities, and editorial knowledge that improve music discovery and strengthen long-term engagement. Nina's archive represents years of curated music journalism, emerging artist documentation, and genre analysis that would have been difficult to replicate organically.
For SoundCloud, preserving these resources aligns with its broader strategy of differentiating itself from mainstream streaming competitors by emphasizing independent creators, niche music communities, and direct artist-fan relationships. The acquisition follows the company's previous investments in music discovery technologies and reflects continued efforts to build a creator-first business model.
Although the financial terms remain confidential and it is unclear whether members of the Nina team will join SoundCloud, the acquisition demonstrates that valuable digital platforms can continue creating strategic value even after commercial operations end. By preserving Nina's editorial legacy while expanding opportunities for independent musicians, SoundCloud is strengthening both its competitive positioning and its long-term brand identity as a platform designed around creator empowerment rather than algorithm-driven distribution alone.
