Samsung Strengthens Smart TV Security by Removing Apps That Turn Home Networks into Proxy Gateways

Samsung has launched a comprehensive effort to strengthen the security of its Smart TV ecosystem after new cybersecurity research revealed that several applications available through its television platform contained software capable of sharing users' internet connections with third parties. The findings have prompted the company to tighten developer policies, prohibit future submissions containing residential proxy technologies, and initiate the removal of existing applications that include similar functionality.

The issue centers on residential proxy networks, commonly referred to as resproxies. These systems route internet traffic through ordinary consumer devices connected to home or office networks, allowing external parties to appear online as if they were browsing from legitimate residential locations. Although residential proxy technology has legitimate commercial applications—including bypassing censorship, conducting market research, and collecting publicly available web data—it has increasingly become associated with cybercrime, account abuse, large-scale web scraping, and efforts to disguise malicious online activity.

According to the security research conducted by Norwegian cybersecurity company Mnemonic, some Smart TV applications contained embedded proxy software capable of transforming a television into a persistent network exit node. Once activated, the software could continue operating in the background even after the application itself was no longer actively in use, effectively allowing third-party internet traffic to pass through the owner's network connection.

The researchers argue that the problem is amplified by the design of certain television applications. Many Smart TV apps function primarily as lightweight containers that load most of their content from remote web servers. While Samsung's review process may examine only the limited source code packaged with the application, much of the operational logic and content is delivered dynamically after installation. As a result, the software reviewed during approval may differ significantly from the functionality ultimately presented to users.

One example highlighted by the researchers involved a Pac-Man game that had previously appeared in Samsung's "Editor's Choice" recommendations. Analysis showed that the application incorporated residential proxy software developed by Bright Data, a company known for operating one of the world's largest proxy infrastructure platforms. The research noted that the proxy component remained inactive until users accepted a consent prompt. Once permission was granted, however, the software could continue operating in the background until the application was removed.

By obtaining privileged access to a Samsung television during testing, the researchers monitored network traffic flowing through the device and observed activity consistent with large-scale public web data collection. Some of the traffic appeared related to scraping publicly available LinkedIn information and gathering datasets that may support artificial intelligence model development. The researchers emphasized that only a small fraction of the overall network activity could be directly observed during the investigation.

A particularly significant concern raised by the research involves the possibility that remotely hosted application code could be modified after deployment. Because many Smart TV applications rely heavily on web-delivered content, a server-side update could potentially alter application behavior without requiring users to install a new version. Researchers warned that such an approach could theoretically activate proxy functionality across an enormous installed base if appropriate safeguards were absent.

Samsung responded by announcing a platform-wide policy shift. The company confirmed that it has already blocked new Smart TV applications containing residential proxy software from entering its marketplace and is actively identifying existing applications that violate the updated rules. The company also stated that stricter developer requirements are being implemented to eliminate residential proxy software development kits from its television ecosystem.

Samsung's decision follows similar action taken by LG, which recently announced comparable restrictions after separate reporting suggested that a substantial percentage of applications available through its television marketplace also contained residential proxy technologies. Together, these developments indicate a broader industry effort to improve software governance across connected consumer electronics.

From a strategic perspective, the incident highlights the growing importance of software supply chain security within modern hardware ecosystems. Smart TVs are no longer standalone entertainment devices; they have evolved into permanently connected computing platforms capable of accessing personal accounts, cloud services, payment systems, and home networks. Consequently, application governance has become a critical component of product trust and long-term brand value.

Economically, stronger application oversight protects both consumers and platform operators. By reducing the risk of network abuse, manufacturers preserve customer confidence, strengthen enterprise partnerships, reduce regulatory exposure, and reinforce the competitive positioning of their connected ecosystems. As smart home devices continue expanding in capability, security is increasingly becoming a defining feature that influences purchasing decisions alongside display quality, performance, and entertainment features.

Ultimately, Samsung's latest actions demonstrate a broader transition across the consumer electronics industry toward proactive cybersecurity governance. Rather than treating security as a secondary software feature, manufacturers are increasingly integrating application review, developer accountability, and continuous monitoring into the foundation of their connected device strategies, reflecting the growing role of digital trust in sustaining global technology brands.
