KYIV – June 29, 2025 — Ukraine's government has reported the largest aerial assault by Russia since the beginning of the full-scale invasion in February 2022. The overnight offensive involved an unprecedented 477 drones and 60 missiles, according to the Kyiv Independent.
The bombardment, which targeted cities across Ukraine, resulted in two civilian deaths, over a dozen injuries, and widespread damage to key infrastructure. In a major blow to Ukraine’s defense, a newly deployed F-16 fighter jet was downed during the attack.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that the F-16 pilot, Lt. Col. Maksym Ustymenko, died after intercepting seven Russian threats. The government awarded him the title of Hero of Ukraine, posthumously.
The assault marks a sharp escalation in Russia’s ongoing summer offensive. Analysts say the scale and coordination of the attack aim to weaken Ukraine’s defense capabilities and morale, especially as peace talks remain stalled and Western pressure on Russia wanes.
The Kremlin had previously stated that a third round of peace negotiations would be held by the end of June. However, no concrete plans have been made. Russian spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said future dialogue “depends on the Kyiv regime,” suggesting Moscow is demanding concessions before resuming talks.
Meanwhile, both the EU and the United States are under scrutiny for failing to introduce new sanctions or provide immediate military support. Zelenskyy has reiterated Ukraine’s urgent need for Patriot missile systems and broader air defense capabilities from allies.
With international attention wavering and no diplomatic resolution in sight, this record-setting attack signals Russia’s intent to push further while testing the resolve of Ukraine’s partners.
