Reddit Bets on Video and Audio to Turn Community Content Into a Scalable Media Experience
The platform’s planned “Video Reddit” format signals a broader strategy to expand engagement, modernize content discovery and compete in the short-form media economy

Reddit is preparing to broaden the way users consume the conversations and stories generated across its communities, with plans to test a new experience that combines video viewing with audio-based access to popular posts.
The initiative, described by the company as a “Video Reddit” experience, represents more than a product update. It reflects a strategic effort to adapt Reddit’s community-driven content model to an internet increasingly shaped by short-form video, passive listening and algorithmic content discovery.
For years, Reddit has differentiated itself through discussion, anonymity and highly specialized communities. Its value has been built around text-based conversations, user-generated knowledge and the ability of individual posts to develop into large public discussions. The company is now exploring how those same conversations can be repackaged into formats that require less active reading and can reach audiences beyond the platform’s traditional user base.
The commercial opportunity is significant. Video has become one of the most important drivers of attention across digital platforms, while audio consumption continues to grow through podcasts, narrated content and background listening. By allowing users to watch videos and potentially listen to Reddit posts without remaining focused on the screen, the company could increase the amount of time people spend engaging with its content.
This shift may also create new opportunities for advertising and content monetization. Video formats generally offer broader options for premium advertising, sponsorships and immersive brand placements than conventional discussion pages. If the new experience increases viewing time and expands content discovery, Reddit could strengthen the commercial value of its audience while developing additional inventory for advertisers.
The company’s strategy also responds to a behavior that has already emerged outside its own platform. Reddit stories have become a popular content category across social media, where creators frequently combine narrated versions of viral posts with unrelated visual footage. Public interest in these formats suggests that Reddit’s discussions have developed value beyond their original communities and can function as a source of entertainment when adapted for video and audio.
By bringing this activity closer to its own ecosystem, Reddit could gain greater control over how its content is presented, discovered and monetized. The move may also reduce the distance between the original conversation and the audiences consuming adapted versions elsewhere.
The competitive context is equally important. Major social, entertainment and streaming platforms are increasingly adopting vertically oriented, short-form video experiences inspired by the rapid growth of TikTok. The format is no longer limited to social networking. Streaming services, professional platforms and e-commerce companies have all introduced video feeds designed to encourage continuous discovery.
For Reddit, however, directly copying the visual structure of competing platforms may not be enough. Its strongest competitive advantage remains the depth and authenticity of its communities. The company’s challenge will be to transform written discussions into more accessible formats without removing the context, credibility and diversity that make Reddit content distinctive.
The early performance of video comments offers a useful indication of user interest. The feature, introduced in June, already accounts for more than 10% of the platform’s video posts. That adoption gives Reddit an initial signal that video can become a more integrated part of community interaction rather than simply an external entertainment layer.
The planned test could therefore become an important step in redefining Reddit’s identity. Instead of being viewed primarily as a collection of forums and discussion threads, the platform may evolve toward a broader media environment where users can read, watch and listen to the same underlying community content.
The company has not yet detailed how the experience will be integrated into its main application or what the final product will look like. Testing is expected later this year, leaving open questions about content selection, recommendation systems, creator participation and the role of automated narration.
Those decisions will influence whether the feature becomes a major engagement engine or remains a limited experimental format. They will also determine how Reddit balances accessibility with the community context that gives its content much of its value.
Looking ahead, the initiative could help Reddit expand its audience, increase engagement and create new commercial pathways. It may also position the company more strongly within a digital media market where the boundaries between social networking, entertainment, podcasts and video platforms are becoming increasingly blurred.
The broader strategic message is clear: Reddit is seeking to preserve the value of its community conversations while making them easier to consume across different formats. If the company can combine the scale of short-form media with the depth of its discussion communities, the new experience could become an important part of its next stage of growth.
