Trump has repeatedly stated that he could broker a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine within 24 hours if given the chance. His confidence is based on what he describes as strong relationships with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. However, he has provided little detail on how he would achieve such a rapid resolution.
During recent speeches and interviews, Trump criticized the Biden administration’s handling of the war, arguing that continued military aid to Ukraine is prolonging the conflict rather than bringing it to an end. He has suggested that negotiations should focus on territorial compromises—something Ukraine has strongly rejected.
Despite Trump’s assertions, the situation on the ground remains complicated. Ukraine, with the backing of Western allies, has been fighting fiercely to reclaim occupied territories and has rejected any deal that would involve territorial concessions. President Zelenskyy has maintained that peace talks cannot happen unless Russia withdraws from all occupied regions, including Crimea and the Donbas.
On the other hand, Russia continues its aggressive military operations, showing little willingness to engage in meaningful negotiations. President Putin has indicated that any ceasefire must acknowledge Russia’s territorial gains, a stance that Kyiv and its allies deem unacceptable.
Several diplomatic initiatives have been launched to explore the possibility of a ceasefire. China, Turkey, and some European nations have attempted to mediate, but so far, no significant progress has been made. The United States and NATO members remain committed to supporting Ukraine militarily and economically, further complicating any potential peace deal that might involve concessions to Moscow.
With the 2024 U.S. presidential election approaching, Trump’s potential return to power could influence the direction of U.S. policy toward Ukraine. However, whether his proposed approach would lead to an actual ceasefire remains highly uncertain. Analysts argue that the fundamental conditions required for peace—mutual willingness to negotiate and acceptable terms for both sides—are still absent.
For now, the war in Ukraine continues with no immediate end in sight, despite political rhetoric suggesting otherwise.
