OpenAI Expands ChatGPT Health Across the U.S. as AI Moves Deeper Into Personal Healthcare

OpenAI is taking a significant step toward expanding ChatGPT beyond a general-purpose AI assistant by making its dedicated Health experience available to eligible users across the United States. The rollout, which targets logged-in users aged 18 and older on the Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans, represents a strategic attempt to turn the chatbot into a more persistent interface for understanding personal health information rather than simply a tool for answering isolated medical questions.

The move comes as health has already become one of the most prominent use cases for conversational AI. OpenAI says more than 300 million people now ask ChatGPT health-related questions every week, highlighting a large existing demand that the company is attempting to serve through a more structured and data-informed experience. The strategic opportunity is clear: instead of relying solely on general medical knowledge, ChatGPT Health can use information that users voluntarily connect from supported medical records and wellness platforms to provide context around their individual circumstances.

The product addresses a fundamental problem in the modern healthcare market: fragmentation. Personal health information is typically distributed across hospital portals, laboratory reports, wearable devices, fitness applications and insurance-related records. Patients often have to move between multiple systems to understand what has changed since a previous appointment or to identify patterns across different aspects of their health. By bringing selected information into a conversational interface, OpenAI is positioning ChatGPT as a layer that sits above these disconnected data sources, helping users interpret information rather than merely storing it.

The available integrations reinforce that strategy. Users can connect Apple Health and supported medical records from U.S. healthcare providers, as well as services such as One Medical and Function Health. The system can be used to compare test results, summarize changes over time, prepare for medical appointments and explore relationships between factors such as sleep, physical activity and daily routines. The broader value proposition is therefore less about replacing a physician and more about helping individuals arrive at healthcare decisions better informed and better prepared.

This distinction is strategically important for OpenAI because healthcare is one of the most sensitive markets in which generative AI can compete. OpenAI has therefore emphasized that Health is designed to support rather than replace professional medical care and is not intended for diagnosis or treatment.

Users can also disconnect their accounts, with synced data from those sources scheduled for deletion from OpenAI's systems within 30 days.

These safeguards are more than a technical feature; they are part of the company's broader brand strategy. As AI companies compete for increasingly sensitive personal data, the ability to establish clear boundaries around how information is stored and used could become a key differentiator. For OpenAI, building confidence around health data may determine whether users are willing to move from asking occasional health questions to creating a long-term relationship with an AI system that understands their personal context.
