Google’s Next-Generation AI Chip Signals a New Era of Efficient Gemini Computing

Alphabet is advancing a custom AI processor aimed at dramatically improving Gemini's efficiency while strengthening its long-term hardware independence and AI infrastructure strategy.

Alphabet is expanding its long-term artificial intelligence infrastructure strategy through the reported development of a new custom server processor known internally as Frozen v2, a chip designed to make Google's Gemini family of AI models substantially more efficient. Although the processor is not expected to enter production until 2028, the project highlights Google's continued commitment to building an integrated AI ecosystem where hardware and software evolve together.

According to industry reports, Frozen v2 could deliver between six and ten times the efficiency of Google's current AI accelerators when measured by the number of AI tokens generated for every unit of power consumed. Such an improvement would represent a major leap in operational efficiency, enabling larger AI workloads while reducing energy requirements and infrastructure costs.

Google has not officially confirmed the existence of the project, yet the company also stopped short of denying the reports. Instead, it emphasized that its engineering teams continuously research experimental hardware technologies designed to maximize performance and efficiency for customers. Developing proprietary chips provides an opportunity to diversify supply chains while creating hardware specifically optimized for internal software ecosystems.

Competition in custom AI silicon has intensified considerably during 2026. OpenAI recently introduced its first inference processor, known as Jalapeño, marking its transition toward vertically integrated AI infrastructure. Reports have also indicated that Anthropic has been discussing a potential semiconductor partnership with Samsung, demonstrating that custom chip development is becoming a defining competitive strategy across the sector.

For Google, the Frozen v2 initiative carries financial significance beyond technological innovation. Earlier this year, Alphabet announced plans to invest between $180 billion and $190 billion to strengthen its artificial intelligence capabilities and supporting infrastructure.
