A once-viral airplane seating idea is making a comeback—this time with a more refined and realistic vision. The concept, known as Chaise Longue, introduces a two-tier seating arrangement designed to improve comfort and space inside aircraft cabins.

Created by Alejandro Núñez Vicente, the idea first emerged as a college project in 2020 and quickly gained global attention online. While many initially dismissed it as impractical, the designer has spent years developing the concept into something airlines might seriously consider.

The core idea is simple but bold: remove traditional overhead compartments and replace them with two levels of seating. The lower level is designed to offer significantly more legroom, allowing passengers to stretch out more comfortably during flights.

Over time, feedback—both positive and critical—has played a key role in shaping the design. Concerns about privacy, personal space and even comfort have led to major improvements in the latest version. The new model includes better separation between upper and lower seats, as well as a more spacious lower section to reduce feelings of claustrophobia.

Accessibility has also become a priority. The updated concept includes seating options tailored for passengers with reduced mobility, aligning with broader efforts in the aviation industry to make flying more inclusive.

Interestingly, while the original vision targeted economy-class travelers, industry feedback has pushed the concept toward premium economy and even higher-end seating categories. Airlines appear more willing to adopt innovation in premium cabins, where passengers are already paying for enhanced comfort.

Despite the progress, the concept still faces significant hurdles. Bringing a new seating design to market requires airline investment, regulatory approval and extensive safety testing—processes that can take years.

Companies like Airbus have shown early interest in exploring similar ideas, but no official commitments have been made to bring the design into commercial aircraft yet.

For now, Chaise Longue remains a promising concept rather than a reality. Still, its continued evolution—and the industry’s growing curiosity—suggest that the future of airplane seating may look very different from today.
