Carlos Alcaraz Withdraws from French Open Title Defense Due to Injury
The world No. 2 opts for recovery over competition after a wrist injury disrupts his clay season.

Carlos Alcaraz has confirmed he will not defend his title at the French Open this year after suffering a right wrist injury.
The world No. 2 announced that he will also miss the Italian Open, choosing to prioritize recovery following medical evaluations.
The injury occurred earlier this month during the Barcelona Open, where Alcaraz was forced to withdraw shortly after his opening match. Since then, he has also pulled out of the Madrid Open, appearing publicly with his wrist in a cast.
Despite the setback, Alcaraz recently attended the Laureus World Sports Awards, where he was honored as World Sportsman of the Year — a testament to his remarkable achievements over the past season.
The Spanish star had started 2026 in exceptional form, highlighted by a victory over Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open final, making him the youngest player to complete a career Grand Slam.
However, his momentum slowed in recent weeks. He managed just one title since February and suffered a key loss to Jannik Sinner, who has since overtaken him in the world rankings.
Alcaraz had been aiming for a third consecutive title at Roland Garros after back-to-back victories, including a dramatic final last year. His absence now reshapes the competition, leaving the door open for rivals during one of the most important stretches of the tennis calendar.
While the decision is a difficult one, Alcaraz expressed confidence in his recovery, emphasizing that stepping back now will help him return stronger in the future.
