New York City, March 11, 2025 – Mayor Eric Adams joined the Muslim community in a special Ramadan Iftar, reinforcing his administration’s commitment to inclusivity and religious freedom. In a statement, Mohamed Amen, Senior Muslim Advisor to the Mayor, highlighted significant strides made under this administration to empower and uplift the city’s diverse Muslim population.
“Our mission is to uplift and empower our diverse Muslim communities, ensuring their voices are heard and their needs prioritized,” said Amen. With a dedicated team of four, his office has been actively fostering inclusion, advocating for meaningful change, and strengthening bonds across the city.
Among the historic achievements under Mayor Adams’ leadership:
✅ Mosques permitted to broadcast the Adhan (Muslim call to prayer) every Friday and throughout Ramadan, a significant step in religious inclusivity.
✅ 100 new prayer/meditation rooms added to NYPD facilities, recognizing the spiritual needs of Muslim officers and community members.
✅ First-ever historical crescent lighting at One Police Plaza, marking a momentous acknowledgment of Ramadan with the NYPD and Police Commissioner.
✅ First-ever Women’s Iftar at Gracie Mansion, set for this Thursday, celebrating the contributions of Muslim women in the city.
Additionally, NYPD Commissioner was a featured speaker at the event, highlighting the first-time crescent lighting at One Police Plaza, which will remain on display in the lobby throughout Ramadan as a symbol of unity and recognition of the Muslim community.
The event was attended by Muslim diplomats, consuls general, and high-ranking Muslim executives within the administration, alongside Muslim police officers, corrections officers, and representatives from various law enforcement agencies. Their presence underscored the growing recognition and representation of Muslim professionals in leadership and service roles across the city.
As the community gathered to break their fast, Amen emphasized that the lessons of Ramadan—patience, gratitude, and service to others—should guide the city year-round. He commended Mayor Adams for his dedication to religious inclusivity and for ensuring that every New Yorker, regardless of faith, feels seen and supported.
“These efforts beautifully reflect the core values of Ramadan—empathy, community, and service. As we come together to break our fast tonight, let us carry these shared principles forward, striving collectively for a more inclusive, compassionate, and prosperous New York City,” Amen stated.
The event marked a historic moment of unity, bringing together faith leaders, law enforcement, and community advocates to celebrate the city’s commitment to religious diversity and cultural appreciation.
