Chicago, IL – February 2026 — DePaul Art Museum will present My Compass Is the Line, a major solo exhibition by internationally recognized artist Barbara Nessim, on view from March 5 through June 21, 2026. Organized and curated by Ionit Behar, PhD, the exhibition marks Nessim’s first solo museum presentation in Chicago.

Spanning more than six decades of artistic production, the exhibition brings together a significant body of work, including early etchings, paintings, drawings, computer-generated works, and a newly developed site-specific installation. Several works will be exhibited publicly for the first time.

The exhibition traces the evolution of Nessim’s distinctive visual language, highlighting her early adoption of digital tools alongside her mastery of hand-drawn forms. Moving fluidly between traditional and technological processes, the works reflect a sustained investigation into line, structure, and conceptual narrative—elements that have defined her pioneering role in contemporary art.

A comprehensive 170-page exhibition catalog accompanies the show, featuring writings by Barbara Nessim as well as scholarly essays by Ionit Behar and Leah Singer. The publication will be available for purchase at the DePaul Art Museum bookstore throughout the exhibition period.

An opening reception will be held on Thursday, March 5, 2026, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at DePaul Art Museum, located at 935 W Fullerton Avenue, Chicago.

With My Compass Is the Line, Chicago audiences are invited to engage with a defining voice in modern and digital art—an artist whose practice continues to shape conversations across generations.
