SpaceX’s Starlink network, which provides global satellite internet, is reportedly burning up one or two satellites daily as part of its orbital management strategy. The company says these controlled deorbit operations are meant to prevent space clutter and ensure long-term sustainability in low Earth orbit.

Why Starlink Is Burning Satellites

Starlink operates more than 6,000 satellites in low Earth orbit, with plans to expand the constellation even further. However, not all satellites remain functional forever — some experience system failures or reach the end of their operational life.

To avoid contributing to space debris, SpaceX uses a controlled deorbiting process where malfunctioning satellites reenter Earth’s atmosphere and burn up safely. This process eliminates the risk of collision with other spacecraft and keeps orbital paths clear.
