Prominent American playwright and actor Jeremy O. Harris, known for his groundbreaking and Tony-nominated play Slave Play, has been arrested in Japan on suspicion of smuggling the psychedelic drug ecstasy. Japanese officials confirmed on Saturday that the 36-year-old artist was taken into custody following his arrival in Okinawa.

According to Tatsunori Fukuda, a spokesperson for Okinawa Regional Customs, Harris was detained on November 16 at Naha Airport after authorities discovered 0.78 grams of MDMA, also known as ecstasy, stored in a small container inside a tote bag he was carrying. Harris had departed from London’s Heathrow Airport two days earlier, with a layover at Taiwan’s Taoyuan International Airport, before landing in Okinawa for a sightseeing visit. The island, known for its mild weather and resort appeal, attracts millions of tourists each year.

Officials said Harris was immediately arrested and transferred into the custody of the Tomishiro police. A criminal complaint was later submitted to the Naha District Prosecutors’ Office for further investigation and the possibility of formal charges. Authorities noted that no additional illegal substances were discovered in his luggage and believe the MDMA was intended for personal use. Further details, including any statements made by Harris during questioning, have not been released.

Japanese law permits investigators to hold a suspect for up to 23 days before indictment, a system that has drawn international criticism for what detractors call “hostage justice,” as suspects may remain detained longer if they deny charges or choose to remain silent. Individuals found guilty of drug smuggling in Japan can face several years in prison, underscoring the seriousness of the allegations against Harris.

Harris gained widespread attention with Slave Play, a provocative exploration of race, power, sexuality, and American identity, written during his time at the Yale School of Drama. The play premiered off-Broadway in 2018, sparking both intense praise and heated debate, including a petition seeking to halt its production. It later moved to Broadway in 2019, earning multiple Tony nominations and establishing Harris as one of the most daring voices in contemporary theater.

Beyond his stage work, Harris has appeared in various acting roles, including a cameo on the rebooted Gossip Girl.
