On a windswept farm near Bandon, County Cork, technology and tradition are working together to tackle one of Ireland’s biggest environmental challenges. At Farm Zero C, high-tech cow collars track animal health, solar panels power the milking parlour, and carefully managed pastures help cut greenhouse gas emissions.

Agriculture is responsible for about 40 percent of Ireland’s total emissions—far higher than the European Union average—mostly from methane produced by the country’s seven million cattle. The Farm Zero C project, launched in 2021, aims to create a climate-neutral and economically viable farming model. Since then, emissions have dropped by 27 percent.

The initiative is a partnership between Carbery Group, a cooperative of over 1,100 farmers, and bioeconomy researchers BiOrbic. The farm combines renewable energy, biodiversity protection, and soil improvement to reduce its environmental footprint. Clover and other legume crops cut the need for chemical fertilizers, while hedgerows and scrub habitats shelter pollinators and birds. Around 80 percent of the milking parlour’s energy now comes from solar and wind power.

Methane remains the biggest challenge, accounting for about three-quarters of the farm’s remaining emissions. To address this, researchers are studying herd genetics, feed additives, and natural dietary supplements that could reduce methane from cattle. The farm also collects data on carbon sequestration in soils to track progress toward neutrality.

Ireland faces EU targets that require a 40 percent emissions cut from 2005 levels by 2030. Failure to meet these goals could cost the country up to €30 billion in fines. The Farm Zero C project provides valuable lessons for policymakers, researchers, and other farmers seeking practical solutions.

Many Irish farmers feel under pressure. “Farmers feel a bit villainised but have already done a lot to try to reduce emissions at their own cost. They need more help,” said project manager Padraig Walsh. Farming remains central to rural economies, with most operations still family-run and facing economic strain.

Experts agree that change must be supported, not forced. Author John Gibbons argues that Ireland’s dairy expansion after EU milk quotas ended in 2015 drove emissions higher, and a more diversified agricultural model—with fewer cattle and more horticulture and tillage—will be needed. Climate scientist Professor Peter Thorne adds that farmers are on the front line of climate change and must be supported through policy and markets to diversify successfully.

Farm Zero C is proving that sustainable farming can work in practice, showing that emissions can be reduced through innovation and cooperation without sacrificing livelihoods or rural identity.
