Geomagnetic Storm Delays Blue Origin’s Mars-Bound NASA Mission
A powerful solar storm forces NASA and Blue Origin to postpone the launch of Mars-bound satellites designed to study space weather.

A geomagnetic storm triggered by a burst of solar radiation has temporarily grounded Blue Origin’s New Glenn rocket, which was set to carry NASA’s twin EscaPADE satellites to Mars. The mission marks Blue Origin’s first major NASA-scale science flight and its first launch since the rocket’s debut in January.
NASA postponed the launch after heightened solar activity raised concerns about the potential effects on the EscaPADE spacecraft. The rocket, a 32-story heavy-lift vehicle, had been scheduled for takeoff from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on November 9, but weather and solar conditions forced repeated delays.
The U.S. Space Weather Prediction Center issued alerts for a severe geomagnetic storm, classified as G-4, caused by coronal mass ejections from the sun. These storms can disrupt radio signals, affect satellites, and create atmospheric drag on spacecraft in low-Earth orbit.
The solar activity also produced vibrant auroras visible unusually far south across the United States, including in Texas, Florida, and Alabama.
Ironically, the EscaPADE mission—short for Escape and Plasma Acceleration and Dynamics Explorers—aims to study similar solar interactions at Mars. The twin satellites, named Blue and Gold, will orbit the Red Planet to analyze how solar particles affect its magnetic field and contribute to the loss of its atmosphere over time.
