CITY OF NEW YORK FILES LAWSUIT TO PROTECT OVER $100 MILLION IN FEDERAL EMERGENCY AND DISASTER GRANTS
NYC joins national coalition challenging federal ban on DEIA programs tied to disaster preparedness funds
NEW YORK, NY – [TN News] — The City of New York has joined a national coalition of nine local governments in filing a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), challenging new federal conditions that threaten to strip cities and counties of over $100 million in critical emergency and disaster preparedness funding.
The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, argues that these new funding conditions are unconstitutional and exceed executive authority — potentially jeopardizing public safety programs that protect millions of Americans.
According to the city’s filing, the disputed federal conditions would force local governments to certify that they do not operate any programs promoting “Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility” (DEIA) and require compliance with.
