Blanche Hoschedé-Monet, the stepdaughter and daughter-in-law of Claude Monet, is finally stepping out of the shadow of the iconic artist. Though often forgotten in the narrative of Impressionism, Blanche was not only Monet’s close companion and assistant, but also a skilled painter in her own right.

New light is being shed on her legacy through a major exhibition at the Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Museum of Art in Indiana — her first solo show in the United States. Titled Blanche Hoschedé-Monet in the Light, the exhibition features 40 of her impressionist paintings alongside personal sketchbooks, letters, and photographs. The show reveals her independent artistic vision and highlights her contribution to the movement she grew up within.

Blanche frequently painted the same landscapes as Monet — haystacks in Giverny, poplars, and the Seine — and exhibited her works with major Parisian galleries during her lifetime. Despite producing around 300 paintings, very few are held in public collections today. However, her legacy is gaining momentum: last year, the museum in Vernon, France, was renamed in her honor, and art institutions and collectors are beginning to recognize the value of her work.

Sotheby’s New York recently reported rising interest in her paintings. "Blanche Hoschedé-Monet’s name is becoming more familiar in collector circles,” said Julia Leveille, Head of Modern Day Auctions. “As awareness grows, so does the appreciation of her remarkable talent."

This renewed attention signals a long-overdue correction in the art world — and perhaps a permanent place for Blanche Hoschedé-Monet in the story of Impressionism.
