Ancient Skull Discovery in China Reveals New Branch of Human Evolution
A 1-million-year-old skull from Hubei Province links to Denisovans, challenging timelines of human ancestry.

In 1990, an ancient skull was uncovered in China’s Hubei Province. Although damaged by fossilization, modern digital reconstruction reveals it belongs to a previously unknown branch of early humans closely related to Denisovans. This discovery could dramatically reshape our understanding of human evolution over the last million years.
The skull, named Yunxian 2, dates between 940,000 and 1.1 million years old. Paleoanthropologists used advanced scanning technology to restore its original shape and compared it to over 100 other fossils. They found that Yunxian 2 is not a member of Homo erectus, as once thought, but part of a distinct Asian lineage that includes Homo longi and the mysterious Denisovans.
This skull belonged to a man likely aged 30 to 40, featuring a long, low skull, a large brain size for its age, flat cheekbones, and a prominent nose bridge. Unlike Neanderthals, it lacks midfacial projection but shares traits with other members of this Asian lineage, such as a broad mouth roof and distinctive ear structures.
The Denisovans, first identified in 2010 from Siberian cave remains, interbred with Homo sapiens and Neanderthals, contributing DNA to many modern humans in Asia and beyond. The Yunxian 2 skull suggests that this lineage emerged earlier than previously believed.
Researchers propose that five major Homo branches—Homo sapiens, Homo longi/Denisovans, Neanderthals, Homo heidelbergensis, and Homo erectus—began diverging over a million years ago. The Yunxian 2 skull’s discovery challenges established timelines and helps clarify the complex “Muddle in the Middle” of human fossils dated between 300,000 and one million years ago.
According to lead researcher Xijun Ni, the findings highlight a more diverse and widespread group of large-brained humans living in Asia long before modern humans appeared. This new evidence offers a critical glimpse into the evolutionary processes that shaped our genus roughly one million years ago.
